Somatic yoga therapy is an integrative approach to yoga that focuses on the mind-body connection, incorporating principles from somatic psychology (the Polyvagal Theory, such as mentioned in the book “The Body Keeps the Score”) and yoga therapy. It emphasizes awareness of bodily sensations, movements, breath and patterns to promote healing, self-awareness, and personal growth.
In somatic yoga therapy, our talented therapist Forooz Shamloo uses a combination of gentle yoga postures, breath-work, mindfulness techniques, and somatic exercises to help you release physical tension, reduce stress, and cultivate a deeper connection with your body and self. The practice is tailored to your unique needs and experiences, with an emphasis on non-judgmental exploration and self-discovery.
The goals of somatic yoga therapy may include:
Pain Management: Helping alleviate physical discomfort and pain by increasing body awareness, improving posture, and releasing muscular tension.
Emotional Regulation: Support with processing and releasing emotional stress and trauma stored in the body, fostering emotional resilience and self-regulation.
Mindfulness and Presence: Cultivating present-moment awareness and mindfulness through focused attention on bodily sensations and movements, promoting relaxation and stress reduction.
Integration and Healing: Facilitating the integration of body, mind, and spirit, promoting holistic well-being and fostering a sense of wholeness and vitality.
Somatic yoga therapy sessions are typically conducted one-on-one or in small groups, this allows for individualized instruction and support. Our experienced practitioner Forooz (with 500 hours of advanced yoga instructor training) works collaboratively with you to co-create a therapeutic experience that honours your unique needs and goals.
