Personalized Nutrition Support

Recent studies have shown a significant correlation and a direct connection between nutrition and mental well-being.  While mental health can be influenced by a combination of factors such as genetics, environment, and lifestyle, nutrition is certainly a key player in maintaining and improving mental health.

One of the main aspects of the relationship between nutrition and mental health is “The Gut-Brain Connection”.  The gut often being referred to as the “second brain” because it is home to millions of neurones which produce many of the same neurotransmitters that are found in the brain, such as serotonin, which regulates mood; thus, a healthy/personalized nutritional plan that is right for your microbiome, genetics and brain health can only support and optimize your mental well-being.

There are certain nutrients that have been found to be particularly important for mental health such as vitamin B, D, Iron, Omega-3 Fatty Acids.  Studies show that diets high in sugars, processed foods, and unhealthy fats have been found to put people at higher risk for conditions such as anxiety and depression. On the contrary, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein has been shown to be associated with a lower risk of mental health issues, and support with decrease in symptoms such as depression.

In Canada, mental health disorders affect millions of people, with depression and anxiety being amongst the most common.  According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 1 in 3 Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year. This statistic underscores the importance of addressing all factors, including nutrition, that can contribute to mental well-being.

It is important to find out what works best for you, your system, genetic predispositions, lifestyle and needs. Working with our nutritionist at Unitive Wellness Clinic to create your personalized plan can be that next step in guiding you to a healthier brain, body, and overall well-being.
