DBT or dialectical behavioural therapy, is a therapeutic approach which teaches tangible skills to help manage concerns such as emotion regulation concerns, impulsivity, and interpersonal difficulties.
“Dialectics” refers to finding the middle ground between two seemingly opposing truths. It emphasizes accepting what we can’t change, and using skills to influence what we can. DBT is an evidence-based approach, meaning there is vast researches which demonstrates its effectiveness.
Psychoeducation refers to education regarding topics such as behaviour, emotional wellness, and mental health.
This group aims to provide a better understanding of why some of us may struggle more with concerns such as emotion dysregulation, or maladaptive behaviours.
The core of DBT are skills. This group
provides an opportunity to learn skills from each of the four DBT modules including mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal
effectiveness. The group aims to provide an opportunity to learn skills in a way that is tangible, acessible, and engaging.
Sharing space with others who may be experiencing similar struggles can create a sense of safety, camaraderie, and understanding. While the focus of this group is obtaining skills, doing so in a group setting can help us engage with the skills in a more meaningful way. Although sharing personal details is not a requirement, we encourage participants to share their experience as they actively learn new skills.
Although we are a clinic serving clients in person in Vancouver and Coquitlam, in order to make this group more accessible to all BC residents it will be happening online.
Each participant will be required to do a free consultation/intake session with one of the facilitators. This will give us the opportunity to figure out whether the group would be an appropriate fit at this time.

Typically, groups consist of about 6-10 members and two trained therapists who guide the sessions. Sessions often start with introductions, check in on the week, followed by some teaching, smaller group discussion and practicing together. Each session is 90 minutes with a small 10 minute break.
Sharing is welcomed and encouraged but not mandatory. Group members may contribute as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. Listening and observing are also valid forms of participation. The group provides a safe space where individuals can express themselves when ready without pressure. You are welcome to share as little or as much you feel comfortable.
Given that a lot is covered in each session, for continuity we encourage everyone to try and attend all sessions; but of course, we know life happens and attending all sessions might not be possible. Consistent attendance is recommended to gain maximum benefit and maintain group cohesion, and the group content is carefully designed to build off previous sessions, but occasional unexpected absences are acceptable. Missing sessions means missing out on shared learning and support.
Participation in evaluation will involve providing feedback on the group process you’re your learning outcomes through a survey. It can include sharing personal progress, what strategies worked for you, and suggestions for improvement. The evaluation is a confidential and anonymous way to help the group facilitators optimize the group experience and continue to develop the group content and structure.
Payments can be made in full before the start of the group, or per week. RCC receipts will be provided per session. If a payment plan is required this can be discussed during sign up/intake process.
